Shouksmiths awarded £2.5 million building services contract for Sheffield’s iconic Moorfoot building
Shouksmiths have been awarded the £2.5 million mechanical and electrical services contract for the refurbishment of Sheffield City Council’s Moorfoot building in the centre of the city. Working for main contractor Henry Boot Construction Ltd., the multi-million pound project comprises vital service upgrades to the majority of the buildings' 11 floors, which is being adapted to provide office space for Sheffield City Council’s employees who are due to move in during 2013 and beyond.
The Moorfoot building, previously occupied by the Manpower Services Commission, was opened in 1981 and is an iconic fixture on the Sheffield landscape. Shouksmiths, who are working with electrical partner J P Glasby (Electrical), Sheffield started on site at the beginning of March and are due to complete the work on this fast track project in October.
The main purposes of the project are to extend the building’s life to meet the Council’s needs and to make the building as energy efficient as possible. To do this, Shouksmiths will be installing new building management systems on all of the 11 floors, to ensure that the existing heating can be controlled and managed as effectively as possible. They will also be installing new switches, sockets and light fittings, refurbishing toilet and kitchen areas, providing upgrades to the reception area and two new training areas, plus providing necessary upgrades to the buildings’ 12 plant rooms. The building’s ventilation systems will also be refurbished in training areas and kitchens, to provide maximum flexibility and efficiency.
Carl Turner, Shouksmiths’ Project Manager commented: “We are delighted to be working on the Moorfoot project and continuing our very positive working relationship with Henry Boot. We have a strong track record of this type of work and whilst there are a number of technical and programming challenges to be met, we are confident that the project will run smoothly and be completed on time and on budget.”
Shouksmiths has recently completed a number of decent homes projects with Henry Boot in the Yorkshire area, and will be working with them again on similar projects during 2013.
