Shouksmiths announce £4.4 million of new contract wins for student accommodation projects

J H Shouksmith and Sons Ltd is celebrating a raft of new contract wins valued at over £4.4 million. The first of the new contracts is to deliver the £1.2 million mechanical and electrical building services for The Edge, a new student accommodation block on Burley Road, Leeds, where it is working with main contractor Tolent Construction Ltd.

The Edge will be run by Icon Inc, a new luxury student accommodation provider, created by Park Lane Properties. Based close to Leeds city centre, The Edge is Icon Inc’s first development and will offer 131 spacious studios and one bed apartments over seven floors and feature a private cinema, gym, launderette, a lounge and a games zone. Shouksmiths’ work on the project comprises the full mechanical electrical and plumbing package including electric heating, ‘leak free’ shower pods, ventilation, air conditioning, fire alarm, LED lighting, CCTV and an intercom system.

Shouksmiths has also been appointed to deliver the mechanical and electrical building services to the Asquith House and Austin Hall student accommodation developments on Servia Road, Leeds. The properties, which stand side by side, are set to offer 298 en-suite bedrooms and studios over six floors, and are being created by property development company PHD1. The project value to Shouksmiths is for £1.8 million and work is due to start on site in the New Year, with completion due in August 2015 in time for the new intake of students.

The company has also just started on site on a £1.4 million mechanical and electrical project at the Court Rooms in Bristol. Working once again for main contractor Watkin Jones, this project is to develop a mixed use block on the site of the old Magistrates court in the heart of the city which will comprise 348 student rooms plus retail and office space.
